iPhone 3G or not?

Since they announced the iPhone 3G I am pretty convinced that there isn’t much new over my current iPhone. Camera is still 2Mega pixels, the plastic case is not so nice, gps is cool, but I have one in my car, 16Gb over 8 could be useful, form factor changed slightly so it may not fit in my car cradle. So it’s basically the same phone with slightly faster internet. But I’m such a sucker when it comes to gadgets and I was just reading this article on How to replace an original iPhone with an iPhone 3G. Now if only my wife didn’t want my current iPhone, I wouldn’t have to buy the new one :-)

I was going to buy a hiptop slide but then the iphone 3G came out and im torn between the two. I wouldnt want to spend over $899 on a phone. I would get the iphone but it could get damaged easily and it looks like on good drop could hurt the screen pretty bad. The Hiptop Slide, however, feels a lot more “chunkey” and looks like it could take a bit of damage.
any advise?

Ronny, the camera can be used as video camera and there will shortly some app to use that feature. At least all the apis for video are there. I do have bluetooth stereo headset which I cannot use, it’s a real bummer. I am certain apple could fix that in software at the OS level, but I am not sure they don’t address this.

Charles, yea I didn’t think of that. I do have a 3g evdo card for my note book, would be cool if I could drop it and use the iPhone for that. Could the wifi network of the iPhone be bridged to the 3g netwrok, and turn the iPhone in a portable 3g router. That would be cool

I totally agree with Charles. The iPhone’s Bluetooth feature is so limited that you have problems each time you want to connect to another device. Add to that, where is the video cam in the new 3G? i don’t think it’s that hard to do if a developer can do it with an application. The cam is still a 2MP as Daniel mentioned when other phones have a 5MP.

I don’t see how the new 3G could’ve made a difference if it wasn’t cheaper. Personally, i can’t find anything new in it.

the iPhone misses a very important feature set : its bluetooth profile is severely limited. I need to be able to use the phone as a router to the Net, and it can’t do it. Let’s hope some hacker fixes it.

Peter, don’t hold back on doing application development on that platform due to AT&T. The iPhone SDK and the iPhone is really an awesome development platform. If you can…do it. The market for iPhone apps is going to be big.

I have my trusty iPod touch…and may well just upgrade that instead to a 32gb version and try apps on that, but it’s not the same as the always connected iPhone.

Peter—You can still get a iPod Touch for app development if you don’t want to pay the AT&T Tax.

I do not have an iPhone and was going to get one of the 3G when they came out (even before they were announced). But AT&T’s money grabbing plan madness has now stopped me from doing it. Real shame as I was going to get into the application development as well.
